Simplify Your Life

Just a few random things to make your days easier and your soul happier...


The rules of "storing things" should be as follows.

Clothes, if you haven't worn it in over a year or it doesn't fit, donate it. (Exceptions: if you were pregnant in the last year you can keep it 2 years, specialty clothes such as a suit or simple black dress that fits or sentimental pieces like your wedding dress)

If it's hobby related, are you still interested in that hobby? If you are not longing to do it, get rid of the supplies.

The Junk Drawer: Organize it with store-bought compartments or an old silverware tray and always put things back in their slot. Once per year, ditch stuff. Super Glue doesn't last forever folks.

Prepare for the next day the night before no matter how tired you are in the evening.

Every time you reach for your wallet to make a purchase, ask yourself:

Why am I buying this?

How often will I use this?

If I don't have this what will happen? (Can I live without this?)

Is this replacing something I already own? Will spending this money cause guilt or turmoil I could avoid?


Too much stuff doesn't make you happier! Be grateful for what you have and find ways to be happy living with what you have. It's much easier said than done.

For some people letting go of things that relate to memories is nearly impossible.

Its emotional and just the thought of letting go causes aching in their heart. I can't give any professional advice but I can remind you that you can't let things control your memories. Live your life and keep making new memories!

Quick Meals

The idea of these recipes is to be quick, healthy and using few ingredients. Please feel free to visit this blog post and add your favorite EASY recipes!

Grillin' Stir Fry (or just on the stove or in a wok)

Chop up veggies of your choice in large pieces (we like green peppers and zucchini) or a bag of frozen veggies (large pieces like broccoli work best)
Cut up pre-cooked sausage (we like the ring style - and if you find a lean version, this is very low-fat!)
Toss in bowl and spray lightly with non-stick cooking spray
Sprinkle on salt, pepper
Add a dash of red pepper flakes to add a little kick or garlic if desired
Put in a grill pan and heat over medium-high for 10 - 15 mins stirring occasionally.

-Serve with instant rice (we like the healthier brown rice) or instant potatoes OR cut up potatoes and add them right to your stir fry (but they need to be par-boiled first.

Traditional Creamy (Cold) Pasta Salad
Boil a box of noodles of your choice
While noodles are boiling mix together the follow in a large bowl:
A can of chicken or tuna (you can use fresh chicken but that requires extra time)
3/4 cup of mayo or miracle whip
1/4 cup of milk
1 tblsp of onion flakes
salt and pepper to taste
1/2 bag frozen peas or other small veggie of choice
Rinse noodles under cold water and stir in...

Simple Casserole
Spray a medium baking pan with cooking spray
Layer the pan as follows:
Spread canned of frozen green beans over the bottom of the pan
Then add pre-cooked chicken or hamburger/ground turkey
Sprinkle in dried onion flakes or chopped onion if desired
Spread one can of condensed cream of celery or mushroom over the meat (if you add milk, the casserole will be more runny)
Place frozen tater tots (or hashbrowns) over the top.
Bake on center or lower rack for 30 minutes at 375 or until the tater tots are golden brown.

Pepperoni Rotini Pasta Salad
Boil rotini noodles (we prefer tri-color)
While noodles are boiling prepare the following
In a large bowl, assemble broccoli (fresh or frozen), cherry tomatoes, black olives and pepperoni slices (omit/replace the undesired)
Rinse noodles under cold water and add to bowl
Pour 1/2 bottle of your favorite Italian dressing over the top and stir

Crock Pot Pork Tenderloin
Place pre-seasoned pork tenderloin in crock pot (garlic or lemon pepper or otherwise)
add one bag of baby carrots plus 4 chopped stalk of celery if desired
add 1-2 lbs of baby red potatoes (cut in half)
add 1 cup of water
cook 3-4 hours on high or 8 hours on low

Quick and Simple Chicken Chili (lowfat)
Put a large pot on the stove and turn burner to high
Add one large can of diced tomatoes
Add 1 tblsp of chili powder (use pre-seasoned chili tomatoes to simplify)
Add 1-2 tblsp of onion flakes (or 1/2 cup of diced onions)
Add 1 or 2 cans of beans of your choice depending on how many beans you like (we like dark red kidney and pinto beans)
Add 1-2 cans of chicken
Bring to boil then simmer 5-10 mins
*Optional - add 1 cup chopped celery and or chopped green peppers
**If you prefer beef or turkey, brown 1 lb of beef/turkey in the large pot and drain grease prior to adding tomatoes then omit can of chicken.

Pigs in a Blanket
Wrap hotdogs in pre-made croissant dough and bake according to croissant package (press shredded cheese into the inside of the dough prior to wrapping if desired)
Serve with fresh veggies and fruit for a well-rounded "finger-food" meal

Breakfast Tortillas (feel free to serve these for lunch or dinner!)
Place a few fresh spinach leaves on a tortilla shell
scramble eggs; place on tortilla shell, sprinkle with cheese and a spoon on salsa
Wrap and enjoy

Noodles/Rice Cheaters
Make 2 pouches/boxes of pre-seasoned rice or noodles according to package directions.
Just prior to the completed cooking time, add a can of chicken/precooked chicken or frozen shrimp or other pre-cooked "meat" of choice plus a can (drained) or frozen veggies of choice.

Chicken Noodle Soup
Place large pot on the stove on high and add 2 boxes of chicken stock (or make broth using bouillon)
Once boiling, add uncooked chunks of chicken
Pour in a bag of egg noodles and 1/2 bag of frozen carrots
Add 1/2 tsp basil and/or a bay leaf if desired
Add pepper to taste
Add 1 stalk chopped green onion if available/desired

TIP OF THE DAY:
Frying hamburger can be time consuming. Save time and money by buying in bulk (5-10 lbs). Fry it up then freeze it in individual freezer bags (1 lb per bag). You can quickly add it to chili, hamburger helper or casserole!

Morning Routine

It's easier to have a good day when you get off on the right foot...

Ever wonder how to make your morning go more smoothly?
Routine. That's it. Plan a routine and follow it.
If your routine includes breakfast and that leaves you scrambling each day, post a list of "breakfast options" inside the "cereal cabinet" so that you can just glance and go with what pleases you each morning without thought. Or better yet, decide the night before. Same goes for any other morning conundrums; what to wear, etc. In fact, some folks plan all their clothes and meals on Sunday night taking the pressure off the rest of the week.
If you tend to leave home without things, designate a spot for them (the car you plan to drive) and gather them the night before.
We can never eliminate the unexpected water leak or other imposition but you can certainly make the average day start smoothly.

Easier said than done you say? It's all about forming a habit. It takes a little work but you will be rewarded with happiness!

Then you can be the one to say "Failure to plan on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine."

How To Moisturize Skin Naturally

Dry, itchy skin. It's uncomfortable and makes skin look older, who wants that? Using lotions and body oils works for some people, but many people can't use these products due to allergens and a sensitivity to certain skin irritants. For these people, using natural methods and products can moisturize their skin. There are foods you can eat--and supplements you can take--that help your skin retain moisture, too.
Step 1

Take warm--not hot--showers, using a body wash that does not have sodium lauryl sulphate, which can dry skin and cause irritation. While your skin is still damp from the shower, apply a moisturizer that has vegetable oils--like olive, coconut or almond--and not mineral oil, which comes from petroleum.
Step 2

Use a steam bath. If you don't have a steam facial, put a pan of water on the stove--you can add lavender essential oil, which is an antiseptic--and bring the water to a boil. Take the pan off the stove. Drape a towel over your head and lean over the pan until the steam subsides.
Step 3

Peel and mash papaya. Mix in 2 tbsp. of honey. Spread the fruit and honey mixture over your face and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse it off and wash your face with a mild hypoallergenic soap. Exederm makes cleansers and moisturizers that are free from allergens and irritants.
Step 4

Add foods and supplements to your diet that promote healthy skin. Magnesium hydrates skin; foods rich in magnesium are meat, seafood, dairy, bananas and tofu. If you take a supplement, use no more than 400 to 800 mg each day. Vitamin A is used to fight wrinkles and can be found in fish oils, cantaloupe, carrots, sweet potatoes, leafy green vegetables, peaches, apricots, papaya and mango. Vitamin C builds the collagen in your skin; take 50 to 60 mg each day. Vitamin E prevents free radicals and is found in grains, legumes and nuts.
Step 5

Drink 8 ounces of fluids each day. Stay out of the sun, use sunscreen and wear a hat to protect skin from the drying effects of the sun.

Potato Salad for Baked Potato Lovers

Easy Potato Salad
Collect all the toppings you would desire on a baked potato. (Sour cream, bacon bits, onions, etc)
Cube and boil enough salad potatoes for the number of people you plan to feed - 1-2 mid-sized potatoes per person. (Leave skins on for true baked potato style)
Cool potatoes in fridge for 20 mins.
Pull out potatoes and top with desired toppings.
Serve.

Doesn't get easier than that folks!

Lack of Energy?

Common Causes of Low Energy & Fat

DTV - How's that workin' out for ya?

An initial web search will bring up a whole page of FCC and DTV websites dedicated to telling you the "good news" about DTV but scroll forward a few pages and the the news is not so cheery.
This was not a successful conversion for many and definitely not as inexpensive for the end user as it was advertised to be.
Why the delay from Feb to June? This was not just a matter of just hooking a little $40 box to a TV in 25% of homes (20M or so...) in the US... It was much bigger and more costly than that!

My opinion: There isn't more hype about the lack of available free TV or the cost/inconvenience to convert because the outlets to express disapproval are limited and many of those "suffering" with the change are not utilizing public outlets (such as the internet - many can't afford the internet in this economy!) to express concerns but calling gov't 800 numbers instead. Those who are using the internet sites are posting to blogs and commentary sites... that you will not find unless you are looking for them...

Oh - check out some of the reporting I found once I scrolled past the first 100 search results that support the DTV Conversion...

Interesting Uses for Everyday Stuff

Can't claim these to be mine... took them from an email forward!
1. Budweiser beer conditions the hair
2. Pam cooking spray will dry finger nail polish
3. Cool whip will condition your hair in 15 minutes
4. Mayonnaise will KILL LICE, it will also condition your hair
5. Elmer's Glue - paint on your face, allow it to dry, peel off and see the dead skin and blackheads if any
6. Shiny Hair - use brewed Lipton Tea
7. Sunburn - empty a large jar of Nestea into your bath water
8. Minor burn - Colgate or Crest toothpaste
9. Burn your tongue? Put sugar on it!
10. Arthritis? WD-40 Spray and rub in, kill insect stings too
11. Bee stings - meat tenderizer
12. Chigger bite - Preparation H
13. Puffy eyes - Preparation H
14. Paper cut - crazy glue or chap stick (glue is used instead of sutures at most hospitals)
15. Stinky feet - Jello !
16. Athletes feet - cornstarch
17. Fungus on toenails or fingernails - Vicks vapor rub
18. Kool aid to clean dishwasher pipes. Just put in the detergent section and run a cycle, it will also clean a toilet. (And we drink this stuff!)
19. Kool Aid can be used as a dye in paint. Kool Aid in Dannon plain yogurt as finger paints, and it won't hurt kids if they eat it!
20. Peanut butter - will get scratches out of CD's! Wipe off with a coffee filter paper
21. Sticking bicycle chain - Pam no-stick cooking spray
22. Pam will also remove paint, and grease from your hands! Keep a can in your garage for your hubby
23. Peanut butter will remove ink from the face of dolls
24. When the doll clothes are hard to put on, sprinkle with corn starch and watch them slide on
25.. Heavy dandruff - pour on the vinegar !
26. Body paint-Crisco mixed w/food coloring. Heat Crisco in the microwave, pour in to an empty film container & mix w/food color of choice!
27 Tie Dye T-shirt - mix a solution of Kool Aid in a container, tie a rubber band around a section of the T-shirt and soak
28. Preserving a newspaper clipping-large bottle of club soda & cup of milk of magnesia , soak for 20 min. and let dry, will last for many years!
29. A Slinky will hold toast and CD's!
30. To keep goggles and glasses from fogging, coat with Colgate toothpaste
31. Wine stains, pour on the Morton salt and watch it absorb into the salt.
32. To remove wax - Take a paper towel and iron it over the wax stain, it will absorb into the towel.
33. Remove labels off glassware etc. rub with Peanut butter!
34. Baked on food - fill container with water, get a Bounce paper softener and the static from the Bounce towel will cause the baked on food to adhere to it. Soak overnight. Also; you can use 2 Efferdent tablets , soak overnight!
35.. Crayon on the wall - Colgate toothpaste and brush it!
36. Dirty grout - Listerine
37. Stains on clothes - Colgate toothpaste
38. Grass stains - Karo Syrup
39. Grease Stains-Coca Cola-it will also remove grease stains from the driveway overnight. We know it will take corrosion from car batteries!
40. Fleas in your carpet? 20 Mule Team Borax- sprinkle and let stand for 24 hours. Maybe this will work if you get them back again.
41. Gatorade for Migraine Headaches. PowerAde won't work.
42. To keep FRESH FLOWERS longer Add a little Clorox , or 2 Bayer aspirin , or just use 7-up instead of water.
43. When you go to buy bread in the grocery store, have you ever wondered which is the freshest, so you 'squeeze' for freshness or softness? Did you know that bread is delivered fresh to the stores five days a week? Mon- Tues-Thurs-Fri-Sat. Each day has a different color twist tie.
They are: Monday = Blue; Tuesday = Green; Thursday = Red; Friday = White; Saturday = Yellow.
So if today was Thursday, you would want a red twist tie; not white which is Fridays (almost a week old)! The colors go alphabetically by color Blue-Green-Red-White-Yellow, Monday through Saturday. Very easy to remember. I thought this was interesting. I looked in the grocery store and the bread wrappers DO have different twist ties, and even the ones with the plastic clips have different colors. You learn something new everyday! Enjoy fresh bread when you buy bread with the right color on the day you are shopping.

Exercises/Stretches for General Aches and Pains

Core Strength is Crucial to Relieving Aches and Pains

The Mayo Clinic website has a great section on Core Exercises.  Having a strong core can alleviate many aches and pains in your back and neck and allow you to be more comfortable during physical activity.

Core exercises train the muscles to work in harmony. This leads to better balance and stability.  Weak core muscles leave you susceptible to poor posture, lower back pain and muscle injuries.

You can feel the improvement in just a few minutes a day! The Core Exercises included here are on the Mayo Clinic website healthy lifestyle section if you would like clear instruction for each one. To do just 5 a day, rotating through the list, doesn't take much time and you will notice reduced aches and pains!

What is the difference between the Dow and the Nasdaq?

Both the Dow and the Nasdaq refer to an index, or an average of a bunch of numbers derived from the price movements of certain stocks. The DJIA (Dow Jones Industrial Average) tracks the performance of 30 different companies that are considered major players in their industries. The Nasdaq Composite, on the other hand, tracks approximately 4,000 stocks, all of which are traded on the Nasdaq exchange. Environment... Recycling, etc...

10 Basic Ways to reduce your own waste:
  1. Bulk Stores rule! No wrapping, no packaging, no frills – just about anything you may need sits in large bins, ready to scoop. From pasta to peanut butter (self-ground) and anything in between. Just go easy on those chocolate chips.
  2. BYOB (Bring Your Own Bag). Bring a cool-looking tote to take your groceries away in, and forgo those plastic carrier bags that stay around for the next few millennia.
  3. Recycle. (See below for more links about recycling)
  4. Compost your kitchen scraps. Your flower beds will be happy
  5. Lug Your Mug for take-out coffee; many places will even give you a discount for it.
  6. Avoid take-out food. I know, that can be a challenge on a Friday night. But all those plastic and foam take-out boxes produce a big stream of toxic garbage.
  7. Eat home-cooked meals. Okay, another potential mine field here, but let’s face it: all those plastic and aluminum trays that those frozen dinners and prepackaged meals come in don’t really compensate for their overload of sodium, saturated fats and missing vitamins.
  8. Drink tap water instead of bottled water. Evian and Perrier are no longer cool.
  9. Repair, don’t throw out. Need I say more?
  10. Buy durable. Sure, it may be a little bit more to get the better quality product, but it will last much longer and always pays for itself in the long run.
Reuse Revolution
All these things will also help reduce stress in your life by reducing clutter!
1) Thrift Stores: One of the best places to find items for reuse is at your local thrift store. From clothing to furniture, thrift stores are an inexpensive and eco-friendly place to nab just the right new-to-you item.
2) Shop At Home: Before any outing that may involve a potential purchase, be sure to check your house thoroughly for the items you need. Items from tape to picture frames can often be found lurking in a box in the closet or the murky “everything” drawer in the kitchen. Avoid impulse buying.
3) Swapping: Another great way to stave off the urge to shop and give yourself a great excuse to throw a party is to organize a swap with friends. Depending on your interests and needs, almost anything is fair game - clothes, books, toys and CDs are all popular items at a swap. Ask friends to bring some snackables and drinkables as well, and you will easily have yourself a fete, all without a new purchase. You can also check out the many swapping websites that easily and inexpensively allow members to swap books, CDs and DVDs online.
4) Free Stuff: There are many ways to “shop” online without ever spending a dime. Websites such as Craigslist, Freecycle, and Freebootr have myriad free items that are yours for the taking.
5) Lending and Borrowing: If you do find that you need a necessity such as a book or a tool, ask your friends if they have what you need first (and offer what you have in exchange when they need it). As we all learned in the sandbox, sharing is a great way to extend and expand the use and variety of resources. Don’t forget about the library too; after all these years, it’s still a good place to find a book!
*And rental centers - what a great place to get lawn chairs, tables, punch fountains and other things that are not for daily use when you need them!
